Conservative Environmentalists?

My friend Meghan recently wrote an article on this subject for our school newspaper. She made some pretty good points. God gave us this land and isn’t our responsibility to take care of it? When most of you here someone speak on the issue of the environment, us conservatives automatically tune it out. We think, “Oh that’s a liberal idea.” We don’t even take the time to listen. But in reality God gave us this land to take care of and we should all do our part to preserve it. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying go vote for a liberal in the next election. I’m just saying take seriously what God has given us and do your own part to help preserve it. Rather you might help clean up a park, start recycling, or plant a tree. And next time you here someone speaking on the issue of the environment, listen to what they have to say. God gave us this land and as Christians it’s our duty to help it stay in its best condition for years to come.

thats what i thought until this year. I do agree that we should keep our air and parks clean and all of that but you know how they say if we keep polluting our air the icecaps will melt more and the world will be flooded? if that were the case the rapture would never occur. we would all be dead. so if we dont change anything, we keep polluting and not cleaning, not a whole lot will change. idk. just my opinion. love!

I agree with what you said. We do need to take better care of our planet.

good point Sarah. i agree with your friend meghan...lol.
maxybaby- while it is true that God will protect mankind from anything as fatal as another world flood until it fits into his plan, there are also smaller consequences that will occur if we completely ignore the condition of the earth. Some of the theories of eviornmentalism are not logical from a christian perspective, but the actions suggested are. I think that's more of Sarah's point than what u said.

Nice blog Sarah! =)
luv ya

Well, I am a conservative, but have always been interested and involved in the environment, but I agree with you and going to a "green" school like Guilford College has REALLY opened my eyes to what is happening to our beautiful planet. So much could be easily corrected that I agree that we should be more involved. GO HYBRID SOLAR PANELED CARS! Kat :)

Thank You so much for everyone's comments and feedback. I really want to get everyone thinking on the matter. It's important to think even if we all don't quite agree. =]

I used to not care too much about recycling and things but now i am careful to do that. I think it is our duty and resposibility as people here on this earth to care for the earth. To just throw things away and not to care is crazy! Our family still hasn't figured out what to do with plastics that have recylce #'s higher than 2.

Good for you! I use my platic grocery bags over and over till they fall apart. I hope more teenagers take an interest in the environment.

Being a good steward of the earth is key, however I don't think that means hindering the growth of humanity in order to 'save the planet' as many of the more radical environmentalists would propose.

For instance, I'm all for the development of safe hydrogen fuel for cars (or perhaps even sugar ethanol, as corn ethanol is worse than gasoline), however should we regulate gas-based cars until we reach that point? Absolutely not! We're nowhere near running out of oil, extra drilling hasn't been proven to cause any real environmental hazards, and we have more than enough to last at our current consumption rates (plus growth) for a nice sized chunk of future centuries (plus what's still being formed... oil doesn't just go away, it's formed in the earth like fossils over time).

In addition to that, for the past several years, records have indicated that the globe is cooling down again (part 2 of the repeating cycle, if you believe the historical-cycle theory... which makes more sense than "we're killing our planet all of the sudden" to me) (http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23411799-7583,00.html

Anyway, my only point is, yes we ought to take care of the globe, but "warming" is hardly the crisis that many will make it out to be...
Not campaigning to save the trees is hardly "irresponsible," and with the way God made the world, it tends to find ways to clean itself up rather nicely, how else would it have survived, say, the Industrial Revolution? People were a lot dirtier then... modern tech, if we allow it to continue to progress, will only get cleaner. History has shown us so.

My family has started to recycle as much as we can. I think that it is very important and respctful of God's creation.

Conservatives have always have lead way in environmental law. Look at the clean air laws the US has passed.

Clean Air Act of 1975 - Nixon
Clean Air Act of 1990 - Bush Sr.

True envirnmentalism is not in te hands of the goverment.
